99.9% of the substance in our solar system is made up of the sun. To the left is a scale drawing where you can see a size and distance comparison between the planets and the sun. Where are you on that tiny dot in the universe called earth? How fragile is that layer that protects us from the sun? The closer to the sun that each planet is, the faster it travels and the shorter its year. For example Mercury cruises at around 110,000 miles an hour orbiting the sun in only 88 days. Earth at a nominal 67,000 miles an hour taking 365 days. Pluto pokes along at 10,000 miles an hour taking nearly 248 of our years to make one trip around. We now know that there are places that are so far away that our whole solar system would appear as less than a twinkling star from there.
